Job Announcement:

The University of Texas Marine Science Institute is currently seeking someone to fill a part-time position as an Education Husbandry Specialist at the Patton Center for Marine Science Education, in Port Aransas, Tx.

Description:

This person will join the Education team to assist the full-time Education Aquarist with fish husbandry as well as assisting the team with educational programs and daily Patton Center operations, including interacting with guests and giftshop sales. This person will also be fully responsible for all fish systems when Education Aquarist is out. This position is 19 hours a week with a flexible schedule. We are looking for a friendly person who is experienced in fish care and excited to educate the public about the Gulf of Mexico and the ecosystems surrounding us.

Responsibilities

* Life support systems maintenance.

* Provide daily care and feeding of animals according to established protocols.

* Prepare and administer prescribed diets, supplements, and medications.

* Monitor animal health and behavior, reporting any concerns to the Education Aquarist.

* Administer and assist with medical treatments and routine health checks.

* Maintain accurate records of animal care, treatments, and observations.

* Collection of exhibit animals when needed.

* Assist with quarantine measures for animals when needed.

* Educate visitors and staff about animal care and conservation efforts.

* Assist with Patton Center operations, including guests, exhibits and programming.

* Assist and help train Patton Center docents and Education sector volunteers.

* Assist with gift shop operations including sales, inventory, display upkeep and maintain accurate records.

* Follow all safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment for staff and animals.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Previous experience in animal husbandry, or related field.

Strong understanding of husbandry practices.

Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's in Biology, Environmental Science, Animal Science or equivalent.

Relevant coursework or certification in animal care or related field.

2 years of experience in fish husbandry.

Salary Range

$15/hour up to 20-24 hours per week

Working Conditions

The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Exhibit maintenance requires climbing ladders, handling chemicals, walking above tight exhibit spaces and standing for extended periods. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. May be requested to work during after-hours special program events.

Work Shift

20-24-hour work shift spread throughout the work week. Days are dependent on person hired.
