Texas Science & Natural History Museum (Texas Memorial Museum) is developing new exhibits, programs, and experiences that spark curiosity, promote belonging, and tell stories about Texas science and natural history. Texas Science & Natural History Museum seeks a Museum Attendant to provide a positive visitor experience while monitoring and assisting with security at the museum.

Provide a positive visitor experience while monitoring and assisting with security at Texas Science & Natural History Museum. Interact with visitors of all ages and conduct oversight of building facilities during museum operating hours and for special events.

Purpose

To ensure a safe and pleasant experience for staff and visitors to Texas Science & Natural History Museum, while protecting the University's collections and property.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the safety and security of Texas Science & Natural History Museum by monitoring and protecting visitors, exhibitions, building, and grounds. Provide clear guidance, direction, and information to ensure that all visitors have a positive and welcoming experience.Provide knowledge of museum amenities, exhibitions, and events to visitors.
  • Document and report observed physical interactions with exhibits and collections by visitors, and address any inappropriate behavior in a confident, calm, and friendly manner. Report any missing, damaged objects, or unusual conditions to supervisors. Report any irregularities pertaining to building operations, safety, or fire hazards.
  • Follow museum policies and security procedures to assist in the opening and closing of the museum, daily operations, and during special events. Actively participate in training programs to improve knowledge of the museum, security best practices, and customer service skills.
  • Operate freight elevator and manual warehouse equipment and work as a team member to set up furniture and equipment for events; complete other manual duties as assigned.
  • Serve as initial responder in the event of an emergency, know evacuation procedures and routes, contacting a supervisor when appropriate. Act in a calm and decisive manner in assisting in the evacuation of the public and staff from the building during fire alarms or other emergencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED

  • Previous experience in a museum or other cultural organization

  • Must enjoy working with the public and have ability to deal with a wide variety of people in varying circumstances

  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Promotes collaborative climate that welcomes all individuals to the museum

  • Ability to calmly organize and effectively direct in emergency situations

  • Ability to work effectively within a team and individually

  • Demonstrated professional demeanor and personal initiative

  • Availability to work weekends and evenings

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree

  • Educational background or interest in science and natural history

  • Familiarity with Texas Science & Natural History Museum (formerly known as Texas Memorial Museum)

  • One to three years security experience in an art museum or general museum/gallery, or other cultural organization

  • Current certification in AED, CPR, and First Aid

Salary Range

$20/hour

Working Conditions
  • Use of manual dexterity and occasional repetitive use of a keyboard while working at a desk and computer.

  • Climbing of stairs and ladders.

  • Must be able to stand and walk for several hours at a time.

  • Must be able to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs.

  • Occasional work around museum exhibits and electrical, mechanical, and heavy equipment.

Work Shift

Varies weekly Tuesday through Sunday; some evenings.

Employment Eligibility:

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
