Responsibilities

Job Summary:

Provides and supervises the complete dental care of facility detainees/inmates. Evaluates and seeks improvement in the facility dental health program, dental services provided, patient care required/administered, dental operative conditions and equipment in use. Functions as a consultant to the facility staff physician.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Initiates and maintains compliance with company policies for
  • Completes an initial dental screening on all new commitments within seven (7) days.
  • Evaluates those patients needing or applying for dental care and makes recommendations deemed clinically appropriate. Takes impressions for dental plates. Sends prostheses to outside dental labs.
  • Formulates and create treatment plans on an individual basis after a thorough exam.
  • Performs routine cleaning, drilling, filling, and extraction of teeth in accordance with National Commission for Correctional Health Care Standards for dental
  • Educates patients on maintaining proper oral health and prevention.
  • Teaches patients about diet, flossing, use of fluoride, and other aspects of dental care
  • Prescribes pharmaceuticals, other medications, and treatment regimens to treat identified and documented dental conditions and regularly reviews those cases requiring ongoing medical/pharmaceutical attention.
  • Produces clear and concise health records, reports and correspondence, including the use of Electronic Health Records system
  • Monitors need for dental supplies and
  • Provides in-service training for health staff members on appropriate issues, such as dental hygiene, dental care, dental emergencies, and techniques.
  • Supervises the work of professional, technical and administrative Provides input into performance evaluation.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and comply with all federal and state health information privacy laws.
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively with the Hospital medical team, Psychiatric, Mental Health Professionals, Nurses, Health Technicians and Administrative Assistants.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops/seminars/conferences, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Performs other various duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements
  • Degree in dentistry from an accredited dental school. Licensed to practice as a registered dentist in the state in which the facility is located is required.
  • Professional license must remain on file at all times at the facility where services are rendered.
  • Demonstrate the ability to adjust medical techniques to accommodate the needs of the specialized population of the correctional setting. This includes communication between medical staff and correctional/detention staff about the care of detainees/inmates while understanding and adjusting for the unique security issues of the facility.
