Job Summary

The Birth Center Nurse Manager works in collaboration with the Unit Director and three other Nurse Manager colleagues. Together the leadership team is accountable for managing the quality, safety, cost-effectiveness, and consistency of patient care for the entire Birth Center. This includes OBED, Antepartum, Labor, OR, and Postpartum areas. Additionally, it serves as a resource to staff, physicians, residents, students, and others in this academic environment.

The Nurse Manager will have responsibility over RNs, clinical staff, technicians, and Patient Care Assistants (PCA). Promotes an environment of teamwork and innovation for a shared voice in nursing practice while supporting an exchange of ideas to continually improve evidence-based practices and refine patient care outcomes. The duties of the Birth Center Nurse Manager include staff selection, human resource management, developing performance improvement goals, addressing educational needs, and staff recognition.

The Birth Center Nurse Manager displays effective leadership, communication, and problem-solving to achieve mutually established goals successfully. They will continuously monitor patient care and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop and refine methods to improve quality and patient safety consistent with National Patient Safety Goals, JCAHO, and infection control standards. The incumbent will develop and enhance systems to ensure critical instrumentation and equipment is readily available for the unit and OR.

The Birth Center Nurse Manager is responsible for proactively carrying out the mission, vision, and values of UCSF Medical Center.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or higher level degree of nursing education
  • Minimum of two years of RN experience in Labor and Delivery
  • A minimum of two years of demonstrated hospital management skills, with progressive expertise in patient care services. Knowledge to manage disaster incidents, critical events and ability to problem solve with critical thinking skills.
  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Active American Heart Association NRP Certification
  • Strong interpersonal skills to create and maintain a climate for effective communication and collaborative decision making.
  • Knowledge of relevant healthcare information technology and patient care workflows and processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Strong leadership, fiscal and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management and staff from all disciplines. Ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives.
  • Master's Degree in Nursing

License/Certification


  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Active American Heart Association NRP Certification
