Job Description

GDS Associates, Inc. has an exciting opportunity for a Staking Technician in the Hi-Line Engineering department. This position will be a remote worker who is willing to travel throughout the Southeast.

A Staking Technician designs medium voltage electric utility distribution facilities for electric cooperatives and municipal clients. This position requires the ability to use or at least have experience in the use of computerized staking packages.

Duties include:



  • specification of pole height/class, pole top assemblies, and guying assemblies
  • ensure engineering and construction standards are followed throughout the design, constructability of the design, and compliance with RUS and NESC specifications as necessary.
  • perform field inspections of construction projects to assure compliance and reports any discrepancies to supervisor.
  • responsible for preparing permits.
  • knowledge in property deeds, right-of-way easements and acquisition.
  • responsible for interfacing with landowners to obtain easements and/or permission for the construction of the electric facilities


The Hi-Line Engineering (Hi-Line) department is a distribution and transmission design group at GDS Associates, Inc. that provides system design and planning services for electric utilities throughout the United States. Hi-Line's services include medium voltage design for overhead pole lines and underground power systems, system planning and analysis, transmission design, substation design, system modeling and load flow analysis, and specialized design services and general consulting services related to the design, construction, and operation of electric power systems.

Experience and Skills

Requirements



  • Technical degree, engineering technology degree (civil or electrical) or business degree with (2) years' experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • Ability to travel to project site.
  • Ability to carry a 20-pound pack several miles in rough terrain.
  • Ability to drive stakes to mark location of future poles and anchor placement.
  • Ability to work a compressed work week (Four 10-hour days) and 100% travel to client/project site.
  • Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check.


Knowledge, Skill and Abilities



  • Think clearly and identify and solve problems in a thorough and logical manner.
  • Communicate clearly, persuasively, concisely, courteously and professionally with co-workers, members, and other business contacts.
  • Interpret verbal and written communications applicable to RUS specifications and structural layouts.
  • Math skills, to include plane and solid geometry and basic algebra; basic statistics and percents; and addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Well-reasoned decision maker.
  • Record field data neatly and accurately.
  • Meet and deal effectively with a wide variety of people.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of land descriptions, basic surveying, and basic electricity terminology and concepts.
  • Operate an ATV depending on job site.
  • Recognize electric utility construction units.
