Physician Assistant

Under the direction of a physician and within the scope of practice, plan, assess, implement and evaluate total clinical care as it relates to the exstrophy-epispadias complex.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive, age-appropriate episodic care to patients.
  • Take medical histories, perform physical exams, order and interpret laboratory tests/x-rays, make preliminary diagnoses, and order treatment.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures such as injections, phlebotomy, suturing, and wound care.
  • May assist with surgical procedures.
  • After demonstration of proper technique and safety, perform basic procedures including cystoscopy and cystogram.
  • Prescribe medication, provide patient care, and make patient referrals to appropriate licensed physician.
  • Instruct and counsel patients on diagnosis, complaints, therapeutic regimens, home care and health maintenance.
  • Coordinate research initiatives in collaboration with PI and research team OR clinical initiatives in collaboration with medical team.
  • Identify patients eligible for IRB approved clinical research studies.
  • May contribute to the design of clinical and/or research protocols and procedures.
  • Participate in daily operations of clinical and/or research protocols in collaboration with other staff.
  • In addition to delivering patient care and procedural duties as delineated above, a major component of this position includes the routine maintenance of the exstrophy-epispadias population. This may include but is not limited to: ensuring yearly renal-bladder sonograms are obtained and communicated to the Johns Hopkins Exstrophy Team; assisting patients as a point-of-contact for coordination of complex care including multidisciplinary clinics, surgeries and necessary requirements have been met for surgery; patient-centered education for pre-surgical consultation prior to major genitourinary reconstruction.

Specific Physical Requirements: Baseline dexterity required to suture proficiently, administer injections if needed, and catheterize patients as required.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demeanor and ability to communicate effectively with young patients and their families are requisite for this position. A strong ability to communicate and collaborate with various members of the multidisciplinary team including Orthopedics, Urology, Plastic Surgery, General Pediatric Surgery, Voiding Improvement Program, Wound Care, Nursing Staff and Ancillary services such as catheter supply companies.



Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree; Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.
  • Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
