We invite applications from scholars who work at the intersections of critical race studies and film/media studies. Candidates are expected to have demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following areas, with a clear focus on media and race: data studies; media industries; emergent technologies/STS (e.g. computer-based algorithms, AI, sensors, CGI); environmental media; gender and sexuality studies; radical and revolutionary traditions (e.g., Black Marxism, Subaltern studies, decolonial epistemologies); critical ethnic studies; Indigenous studies; critical legal studies; biopolitics and governance; sports studies; cultural studies; or other critical approaches foregrounding the intersection of media and race, ethnicity, class, or caste. We are interested in work that is interdisciplinary and global in orientation. We welcome perspectives that generate fresh ways of historicizing media cultures and cartographies; extend theorizations of embodiment, sensing, and affect; critique media industries and their reorganization of the social; and contend with the power operations and predicaments of film and media. Our new colleague will be expected to teach in our core curriculum, and develop courses in their area of expertise. They will ideally participate in existing research clusters and centers within our department, including the Carsey-Wolf Center, the Global Media Technologies and Cultures Lab, and Wireframe Studio; as well as those associated with other departments, programs, and centers on campus, such as Asian American Studies, Black Studies, Chicano and Chicana Studies, the Hemispheric Souths Initiative, the Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies, the American Indian and Indigenous Studies program and the Area Global Initiative. The position begins July 1, 2024. The faculty of the Department of Film and Media Studies engages in scholarship and pedagogy encompassing multiple scholarly approaches and a dynamic understanding of film and media study. We are a robust department with over 600 undergraduate majors and 30 doctoral students. With this appointment we seek to extend the department's scholarly and curricular strengths and advance our department's commitment to diverse, interdisciplinary research and teaching. In 2023-24, UC Santa Barbara departments are partnering with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to launch a special faculty recruitment initiative named after Benjamin Banneker, the 18th-century African American mathematician, astronomer, antiracist, engineer, ecologist, and peace advocate. Funded by an Advancing Faculty Diversity grant from the UC Office of the President, the Banneker Initiative will recruit scholars, scientists, and engineers whose disciplinary and interdisciplinary work would take place within the community of concerns exemplified by Banneker's intellectual, ethical, and social commitments as an African American scientist, especially his desire to advance scientific and humanistic knowledge for the public good.
