Work Location: NRS Campus Administration, MSRB 520 Working Days and Hours Monday-Friday, 40 hours. Must be available for NRS activities on periodic weekends and evenings. Travel is required to Reserve sites several times per year. Department Profile The UCSB Natural Reserve System (NRS) (http://nrs.ucsb.edu/) administers seven of the 39 Reserves that make up the University of California Natural Reserve System (http://www.ucnrs.org/). The 39 Reserves, located throughout the State, include most of California's diverse natural ecosystems and are used for research, university teaching, and public outreach. Of the seven Reserves managed by the UCSB NRS, two are located in the eastern Sierras near Mammoth Lakes, one is on the coast south of Cambria, three are within 40 miles of the UCSB campus and one is on Santa Cruz Island. The Reserves are managed through the UCSB campus NRS office that provides essential administrative and logistic support for staff and operations at the remote Brief Summary of Job Duties The UCSB NRS Executive Director is responsible for leading and overseeing all administrative, budgetary, development, and programmatic activities for the UC Santa Barbara Natural Reserve System, which operates within the UCSB Office of Research (OR) and the UC-wide NRS. The Reserves are managed through the UCSB NRS campus office that provides essential administrative and logistic support and leadership for staff and operations at the remote Reserve sites. The Executive Director works in consultation with and under the general direction of the UCSB NRS Director. The Executive Director oversees all personnel and budgetary aspects of the UCSB NRS, including fundraising. The incumbent leads and engages in strategic planning and program implementation on behalf of the UCSB NRS and the Reserves. In representing and leading the UCSB NRS, the incumbent interacts regularly with UCSB NRS Director, the UCSB Office of Research, the UCSB NRS Advisory Committee, the UC NRS, and all staff of the UCSB NRS, as well as UCSB campus departments and units affiliated with or servicing the UCSB NRS and external stakeholders in government, private, academic, and other sectors as appropriate. Job Functions/Percentage of Time/Duties * 50% Administration and Planning: Lead, plan, manage, and supervise operations, budget, and personnel in support of the UCSB NRS mission. Develop, lead, and implement shortand long-range strategic, programmatic, and budget plans for UCSB NRS. Serve as the control point and liaison between the UC and UCSB NRS, and the Reserves for budgetary, strategic planning, and similar objectives. Oversee the UCSB NRS budget. Using knowledge of UC and UCSB policies, procedures and regulations, apply best financial and management practices for UCSB NRS objectives and goals. Take responsibility for budget analyses for the UCSB NRS including the Reserves; provide budget analyses to UCSB NRS Director. Analyze use and prepare use statistics for UCSB Reserves. Work with Reserve Directors to develop strategies for attracting new users and to promote Reserve use. Assess, develop, and implement ways to increase UCSB NRS and Reserve visibility. Interact * 40% Monthly Development Identify grant, foundation, and agency funding opportunities in support of fundraising for the UCSB NRS including individual Reserves, including in consultation with Reserve directors. Make application to funding agencies in support of the Reserves, emphasizing programs and needs as identified through strategic planning in consultation with the UCSB NRS Director and the Reserve Directors. Lead a full range of development and fundraising activities including developing fundraising strategies, coordinating activities and giving presentations, tours and lectures to a wide range of academic, agency, public and private groups. Assist and support Reserve Directors in development activities on behalf of individual Reserves. Seek funding opportunities to support new Reserve infrastructure and facilities' renovations from public and private sources. Collaborate with Reserve Directors to write funding proposals to State, Federal and private agencies and UC programs, and work with the UC NRS Development Officer to develop donor support. Write or co-write proposals, reports, and plans for Reserve activities and inter-agency resource management programs and funding. Manage grant funds. Engage and enlist the UCSB NRS Director and the UCSB NRS Development Officer in fundraising activities, including * 10% Scientific Support Bring scientific expertise to bear on assisting the UCSB NRS and Reserve Directors with a full range of scientific issues related to, but not limited to: (1) individual Reserve stewardship, (2) Reserve use and programmatic, logistical, and use conflicts, (3) resource management, (4) research priorities, (5) community impacts and concerns, and (6) UCSB and UCOP priorities, needs and concerns related to scientific activities. Attend meetings, such as the Organization of Biological Field Stations (OBFS) and Natural Areas Association, hearings, and conferences providing scientific knowledge, opinions and guidance.
