Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner will work as a Psychiatric and Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) provider in the UCSF Women's HIV Program. WHP is an outpatient primary care clinic for women living with HIV (WLHIV) that uses an innovative model of trauma-informed healthcare to provide culturally sensitive and effective integrated medical and behavioral health care to patients as well as nurturing support to staff and providers. WHP has a strong multidisciplinary team of providers and staff to address patients' needs in a holistic and integrated way-including primary care, pharmacy, Ob/Gyn, psychiatry, therapy, social work, case management, substance use, and nursing.

The NP is an integral member of the behavioral health team at WHP and will provide trauma-informed clinical care to WHP patients who are experiencing psychiatric and/or substance use or dependency concerns. Specifically, the NP provides psychopharmacology assessment, treatment, and monitoring; and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) initiation and monitoring for alcohol and drug use. The NP works closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide integrated behavioral health care to WHP primary care patients that will include biweekly team case conferences, joint patient visits, and team family visits. The NP provides individual and group interventions and occasional home visits to patients and will supervise psychiatry nursing students in the clinic. Additionally, the NP develops and updates clinic workflows as well as protocols and procedures for MAT and participate in clinic research activities as needed.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Division of Infectious Diseases consists of 91 faculty, fellows, and staff whose work is grounded in deep commitment the highest standards of clinical care and teaching, as well as, research leading to new approaches to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases. The Division of Infectious Diseases employs and trains leaders in academic, superb clinical researcher scientists and basic scientists, and outstanding clinicians. Our faculty are leading experts in adult infectious diseases.

Required Qualifications


  • A minimum of 10 years experience providing mental health services including psychiatric evaluation and medication management to adults from diverse backgrounds in terms of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and ability/disability.
  • A minimum of 10 years experience working with people with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders
  • A minimum of 5 years experience working with women living with HIV
  • A minimum of 3 years experience providing MAT for opiate and alcohol use disorders
  • A minimum of 2 years experience supervising nursing students
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate trauma-informed principles and values into clinical practice
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective clinical care in both English and Spanish
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate group interventions

Preferred Qualifications


  • Lived experience of HIV, trauma, racism and / or other forms of discrimination, substance use, mental health concerns, and / or chronic health concerns

License/Certification


  • Must hold current national certification from an accepted certifying agency and provide by first day of work
    • Accepted Certifications for this position: Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC)
  • Must hold a current and active RN and NP and Furnishing license in California
  • Must have completed a BRN recognized graduate master's degree program as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Must obtain an active and/or transferable DEA license to California and provide evidence by 90th day of clinical practice
  • Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through credentialing by first clinical day. CCS enrollment as appropriate for pediatric environments
  • Must hold current AHA BLS as minimum requirement
  • Additional certifications required for clinical setting: X waiver/DATA Waiver

UCSF Health requires all Advanced Health Practitioners (APP) to be credentialed through OMAG to practice and be privileged through CIDP to function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Health sites and affiliates. Credentialing, health plan enrollment, and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day. Inability to comply with the requirements of OMAG/CIDP AT ALL TIMES will result in either, a LOA or suspension of privileges designation.
