Job Summary

Enterprise Information and Analytics Core provides services to UCSF that include data analysis, data engineering, and user interface development and support. Focused on the build and maintenance of the Enterprise Data Warehouse, EIA Core's mission also includes customer point of contact for the Education and Research divisions of UCSF, as well as the operational reporting infrastructure for the UCSF electronic medical records system and data warehouse administration functions supporting all other EIA teams.

We seek a Data Engineering Supervisor to oversee and coordinate the administration and development efforts applied to our Enterprise Data Warehouse and associated applications in service to our Health, Financial Administrative, Education, and Research customers, with a specific focus on the Education Mission. Leads by example as a hands-on technical asset, inspiring the team to do great work, advance knowledge, and provide superior service to our customers. The supervisor: communicates product and project status to management; is a primary point of contact for EIA Education; ensures customer-oriented operations and adherence to the IT operating model are applied consistently within the team. The Supervisor aids and assists in any project or task efforts required to support the larger mission of the Enterprise Information and Analytics team.

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Source data ingestion to our data warehouse/data lake / lake house
    • Management of data engineering and data visualization staff
    • Conducts intake sessions with other EIA domain managers and customers
    • Delegates tasks for aforementioned data to EIA Education staff
    • Holds team accountable for timely deliverables and maintenance of data flows
    • Advances team's knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS)A tools
  • Developing curated data models
    • Collaborates with EIA domain managers to define and implement data models
    • Advances institutional governance of data modeling
    • Advances team's education on data modeling processes

Generally, the Data Engineering Supervisor will work with EIA (Enterprise Information Analytics), data governance staff, business analysts, end users, data owners, and visualization and data management professionals to:
  • Carry out the design and implementation of data warehouse solutions including data acquisition process design, use of visualization features and functions, data modeling, business rules processing, and data aggregation and summarization techniques
  • Take technical ownership of UCSF's implementation of data warehousing solution set, overseeing:
    • Data engineers' developed training material for customers
    • Usage and resource monitoring
    • Training staff on the use and capabilities available within the solution set
  • Partner with business stakeholders and/or functional business analysts and/or Project Manager/solutions specialist oversee the development of efficient and standards-based data warehouse management solutions using data replication and ETL framework products that satisfy business information reporting needs
  • Serve as a technical leader and advisor to IT and departmental visualization and data engineering developers on the product set
  • Lead the development of solution prototypes that demonstrate performance and usability to business and IT stakeholders
  • Collaborate with data modelers and data integration architects/developers to establish end-to-end data and information delivery architecture
  • Analyze, Design, Develop, and implement ETL workflows using tools such as SQL, SSIS, etc.,
  • Serve as an escalation to resolve complex technical issues in collaboration with staff and provide updates to leadership and business partners
  • Champion and educate business and IT staff on the use of data warehousing and visualization technologies for strategic and tactical decision-making with the use of data to support recommendations/decisions
  • Leads the dissemination of best practices and processes, including outcomes at various internal/external venues
  • Researches and stay abreast of the latest trends in data warehouse technologies and works with vendors to carry out product evaluations and proof-of-concepts

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

UCSF: As a preeminent health sciences campus and health system, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is at the forefront of creating new knowledge from the exploding volume of clinical, discovery, and education data that it creates and manages. As part of this exciting and important endeavor, UCSF is seeking a highly qualified Data Warehouse Supervisor.

Information Technology Services: This position will reside within the Enterprise Information and Analytics team, and work in close alignment with IT Education to develop an overall education data strategy and data warehouse to support the education mission at UCSF.

Enterprise Information and Analytics: EIA's vision is advancing UCSF's ability to care, heal, teach, and discover by providing ubiquitous access to relevant and high-quality information and analytics. We do this by working with our clinical, research, education, and business customers to organize, integrate and govern UCSF's information assets and then develop targeted data sets and analyses that provide important insights.

IT Education: To better serve the Education Mission, UCSF IT has recently created a new IT Education unit, which is in a period of growth. Led by the Associate CIO for Education, this unit is charged with developing collaborative relationships, processes, and services that appropriately enable the education community to execute its mission, while keeping UCSF's IT environment secure and sufficiently cost-effective. With a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, this IT Education team is actively working to establish a computing architecture and services to support digital equity and digital transformation to support and advance the UCSF education mission.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 8+ years as a data engineer/administrator/programmer analyst, or equivalent
  • 3 years of experience as a technical team supervisor, specializing in data engineering and data warehousing, exhibiting demonstrated ability to manage staff, to oversee and complete data warehousing projects, and build dynamic and responsible teams.
  • 5+ years of experience designing, developing, testing, and implementing secure, scalable, and high-performance data warehouse and analytic solutions; at least 3 years of experience as a Data Warehouse Developer
  • 3 years of experience in advanced skills associated with software specification, design, modification, implementation, and deployment of large-scale scope.
  • 3 years of experience with dimensional data modeling and relational databases
  • 3 years of experience in SQL
  • Experience creating and maintaining data modeling standards
  • Experience with AWS and/or other cloud data engineering tools
  • Experience in the analysis, design, development, and implementation of ETL workflows using tools such as SQL, Datastage, SSIS, etc.,
  • Experience in developing technical staff
  • Excellent project leadership and management skills.
  • Ability to communicate with high proficiency, both verbally and in writing, with all levels of management and staff, in both technical language and business terms.
  • Strong managerial, interpersonal, influencing, collaboration, and negotiation skills
  • Proficient in developing technical specifications, presentations, training materials, user documentation, and technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated success with overseeing software development lifecycle for enterprise-wide data warehouse projects and ability to assess and solve complex technical problems
  • Demonstrated ability to understand domain needs and how systems can support those needs. Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated complex problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications


  • 3 years of experience in data engineering and analytics in higher education
  • Experience with predictive/prescriptive analytics and precision medicine
  • BI and Analytics in Higher Education
  • Proficient in Agile/Scrum development methodology
