TITLE: ICM INTERN
LOCATION: Elizabeth, NJ
START DATE: May - August 2023
DURATION: 3-4 months / 15-24 hours per week

BACKGROUND: International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in more than 40 countries and over 20 U.S. cities, the IRC provides resettlement, education and empowerment support to refugees and displaced people. Oftentimes upon arrival and throughout their first few years, our clients face barriers limiting access to services and medical care. The Intensive Case Management program works one-on-one with clients to assess their needs and coordinate services accordingly.

SCOPE OF WORK:

An ICM Intern works closely with the Intensive Case Management (ICM) caseworker to address barriers to health and wellness for refugee and displaced clients with severe physical or mental health conditions, the elderly, LGBTQ+ clients, single-headed households, and victims of sexual assault and gender-based violence enrolled in the ICM program. ICM Interns will be responsible for checking in on the well-being of clients, providing comprehensive support when needed, and building clients' self-sufficiency. *This is an unpaid internship position.*

RESPONSIBILITIES:

.Assist with client check-ins over the phone or through camera (as preferred by the client).

.Develop individualized plans with detailed action steps based on client needs Assist in scheduling client health and wellness appointments and coordinating transportation as needed Educate clients on the U.S. healthcare and benefits systems.

.Explore community resources and connect with outside organizations.

.Keep thorough and accurate case file documentation in IRC's database.

.Keep all digital files up to date and create new digital client files as needed.

.Communicate client concerns and potential challenges to ICM caseworker.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1.Gain experience with the U.S refugee resettlement process and services available to clients specifically in/ around Elizabeth, NJ.

2.Gain experience in identifying clients' needs to appropriately coordinate medical care and connect them to necessary supportive services within the community.

3.Gain experience with conducting wellness assessments 6 months and 12 months after ICM enrollment and keeping thorough and accurate case file documentation of all direct services provided to clients.

REQUIREMENTS:

.Prior experience and/or interest working with refugees and immigrants preferred.

.Prior experience and/ or interest in case management, social work or public health preferred.

.Bilingual ability in one of the following languages preferred for interpretation/translation purposes: Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Pashto. .Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

.Must be flexible and reliable to accommodate client needs. Proficient digital literacy, knowledge of databases and computer programs such as Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).

.Remote interns will need access to a computer and must be willing to comply with IRC acceptable use policies.
