Job Description

JOB OVERVIEW:

IRC in Dallas' Education Program seeks to support clients' immediate needs for stability, while ensuring that near-term demands do not overshadow longer-term economic health. The Curriculum Specialist together with the Education Program Manager, the Adult Education Supervisor, and the Adult Education instructors will implement the Digital Inclusion and English Language Instruction projects aimed at building essential skills so that clients can better access, participate in, and benefit from casework, economic empowerment, and youth programs. Working directly with clients and in close collaboration with the Digital Inclusion and English Language Instruction programs staff, the Curriculum Specialist will provide continuous improvement of the instructional design of course materials. The Curriculum Specialist will also work collaboratively with the Adult Education Supervisor and other refugee service agencies to identify participant learning needs and design course materials based on research and best practices to meet those needs.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Use existing tools to create instructional course materials which incorporate adult learning principles and best practices, such as curriculum, games, student guides, and/or training manuals;
  • Use already developed tools to create engaging and relevant learning activities suited to refugees, asylees, and SIVs with a wide range of cultural and educational backgrounds;
  • Create and edit high-quality visual, audio and interactive learning material using available screen-casting and software editing tools;
  • Collaborate with program staff to continually assess outcomes and redesign course content to ensure it optimizes learning and matches adult learners needs;
  • Collaborate with the program staff to ensure foundational digital and ESL skills are integrated into job readiness programming;
  • Participate as a member of a multi-agency project to share and learn about training needs, resources, approaches, and tools to build digital and ESL skills;
  • Apply trends and best practices in adult learning principles and instructional design when creating course materials;
  • Participate in training and professional development relevant to the role;

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate degree is preferred;
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant work experience in adult education and curriculum design field is ideal;
  • Experience with ESL education and digital skills programming;
  • Previous experience working with refugees or immigrants preferred;
  • Fluency in English, both spoken and written, is required;
  • Fluency in Arabic, Dari, Burmese, Kiswahili or other languages and cultures of the local refugee population is strongly preferred;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Effective, professional presentation skills;
  • Proficient in general office software programs, e.g., MS Office suite, email, internet applications and relational databases (familiarity with Efforts to Outcomes particularly valuable);
  • Proven ability to work as a team member in a cross-cultural environment;
  • Detail oriented with excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task and complete work in a fast-paced environment; and
  • Valid driver's license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and the ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area preferred.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Standard office work environment combined with considerable time in the field and in neighborhoods where clients live and work.
  • Travel in and around the Dallas metro area to facilitate service delivery, build community relationships and represent the IRC with community partners.
  • Hours outside of typical office hours required at times.
