The Global Broadband Operations team's mission is to provide reliable internet service to our customers around the globe. We are connecting the unconnected in many parts of the world that are getting access to the internet for the first time. We are also helping people stay connected while they work or do remote learning from home, or while they fly for business or leisure on major airlines such as Delta and JetBlue.
The Global Broadband Operations team is looking for a Platform DevOps Engineer to help build our next generation, Kubernetes-based infrastructure platform. As a Platform DevOps Engineer, you'll develop, deploy, and maintain a Kubernetes-based cloud native infrastructure platform. You'll treat infrastructure as code and automate everything you do. You'll keep an ever-watchful eye on the performance of platform-provided services and setup monitoring to stay ahead of operational issues before they happen. You'll have the opportunity to work with modern tools from the cloud native ecosystem and apply your collaborative engineer approach to solving hard problems.
Job Responsibilities
  • Serve on a distributed team of DevOps Engineers that build, deploy, and operate Viasat's Kubernetes-based Hardware Agnostic Platform.
  • Support internal application teams with platform onboarding and manage, monitor, and operate development environments used by application teams.
  • Collaborate with internal and external teams on design and planning for Hardware Agnostic Platform development.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for escalations related to the operation of the Hardware Agnostic Platform Services.
Requirements
  • 2+ years of software development experience
  • Experience coding in one or more of the following programming languages: Python, C/C++, Java, or Go
  • Experience with Continuous Integration (CI) / Continuous Deployment (CD) / DevOps best practices
  • Knowledge of network fundamentals (TCP/IP, load balancers, VPNs, etc.) and Linux system administration
  • Experience working on systems or products with 24x7 operation
  • Experience building software on public or private cloud infrastructure
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience
  • US Citizenship or permanent resident required
Preferences
  • 5+ years of software development experience
  • Knowledge of satellite communications or wireless network technologies (WiMAX, LTE)
  • Knowledge of security fundamentals: PKI certificates, JWT, network policy, etc.
  • Experience with large-scale, multi-team distributed systems
  • Experience with private cloud or edge Kubernetes clusters.
  • Experience with DevOps / "Infrastructure as Code" tools such as Ansible or Terraform.
  • Experience, ideally operational, with any of the following:
    • Databases: Postgresql, redis, Mysql, or Kafka
    • Monitoring and Dashboarding: Grafana, Prometheus, or ELK.
    • Containers/Kubernetes: helm, rancher,
  • Experience in automation and machine learning (ML)
  • Experience building operational runbooks and monitoring dashboards (e.g. Splunk, Grafana)
  • Experience with cloud computing technologies such as AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Systematic problem-solving approach under pressure
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science
