Job Description

Provide critical support in the development of advanced high strength steels. This job will provide Research's Process and Product Innovation Support (PPIS) assistance on testing and sample processing on existing plant process, as well as developing new plant processes; All to support advanced high strength development. Various sample preparation techniques will be utilized to section small and large pieces of steel to prepare them for various testing instruments under the direction of the material development and process development engineering groups.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work in an environment of cross-functional team support to run various testing equipment to assist in processing lab steel and as an individual contributor in Process Support, sampling, processing and testing of material related to steelmaking for development of Gen 3 steels.
  • Required work tasks include operating Lecco Carbon & Sulfur analyzers, OES, Salt Pots, Atmosphere Annealing furnaces, open air box furnaces, and various steel sample preparation tasks related to the processing of steel for Development.
  • Safely use various sample handling and preparation equipment, including but not limited to shears, polishers, hot mor mounts, abrasive saws, overhead electric cranes and forklifts, power tools such as punch presses, band saws, grit blaster, grinders, power shears, lathes and sample degreasing chemical solutions. Preforming sample steel composition test: regulate and monitor flammable annealing gases and perform some work with samples of hot steel and galvanized coatings.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • A focus on Safety. Associates Degree or equivalent education through experience. Targeted degrees would be in Metrology, Instrumentation, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology. The successful candidate will also have a minimum of 2 years of directly relevant work experience.
  • Good mechanical skills to perform routine maintenance on both sophisticated instruments and heavy-duty lab equipment. Knowledge of thermocouples and basic mechanical ability is desirable.
  • Computer skills necessary to operate computer-controlled test equipment and data acquisition systems. Some familiarity with Excel and data processing preferred
  • Ability to use various devices including personal computers and laboratory notebooks to document work through test reports, enter test data in spreadsheets, and plan work with project engineers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work with pilot Operations equipment and SMC will require the person to manually lift items weighing about 40-lbs, push items on rollers weighing more than 1000 lbs. and at times perform hot work wearing flame-resistant and aluminized coats near molten or hot solid steel that is hotter than 2500F.
  • Some, infrequent, travel (10% of work time) may be expected to U. S. Steel or supplier plants.
  • Ability to use a full-face respirator for some HT work.
  • Typical work week is M-F 2nd shift with some OT as needed.
