Job Description

Background of the project

Over the past 80 years, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has developed unparalleled expertise in responding to emergencies and helping uprooted communities to rebuild through long-term, sustainable development solutions. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC's mission is to help people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. The IRC is on the ground in more than 40 countries, providing emergency relief and development programming, rebuilding lives in the wake of disaster and in situations of vulnerability. Through 28 regional offices in cities across the United States, the IRC also helps refugees resettle in the US. The IRC is committed to a culture of inclusivity and empowerment, humanitarian leadership, innovation in all aspects of our work, creative partnerships and, most crucially, accountability to those we serve.

The IRC's West Africa Region is comprised of the following countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Cote D'Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Sierra Leone. The IRC's Great Lakes Region is comprised of the following countries: Burundi, Central African Republic, D.R. Congo, Tanzania.

Scope of Work:

The Regional Interpreter & Translation Quality Specialist will provide essential support to the continuity of the IRC's programming and efforts toward inclusion by guaranteeing quality translation and interpretation within the West Africa and Great Lakes regions of the Crisis Response, Recovery and Development department. In addition to completing translations of new and existing materials, the Regional Interpreter & Translation Quality Specialist understands the IRC's technical language and reviews documents and communication materials to ensure consistent IRC terminology. As prioritized by the West Africa and Great Lakes regional teams, the Regional Interpreter & Translation Quality Specialist provides simultaneous and/or consecutive interpretation during IRC meetings and regional calls, thus supporting meaningful participation into conversations and discussions for West Africa and Great Lakes staff.

Deliverables:

  1. Interpret (simultaneous and/or consecutive) at hour-long intervals between French and English for regional conferences, regional meetings, donor meetings, trainings and informative sessions.
  2. Review AI-enabled translations of new and existing resources (including maintenance and updating already translated documents). This might include donor documentation (awards, sub-award and partnership agreements, and guidelines), leadership speeches, internal policies and processes (i.e. GSC, Finance SOPs, PEERS, etc.), training materials and communication materials.
  3. Ensure quality assurance and use of consistent IRC-specific terminologies in translated materials.
  4. Coordinate local translation procurement in collaboration with country program and Regional supply chain staff, including researching potential companies and supporting procurement processes.
  5. Liaise with West Africa/Great Lakes and HQ focal points to ensure appropriate translation coverage.

Qualifications:

  • Professional fluency in French and English
  • Extensive experience providing professional simultaneous interpretation FR-EN/EN-FR
  • Technical understanding of humanitarian aid structure, with knowledge of context-specific terminologies
  • Excellent oral and written communication, especially to listen closely and proactively seek clarification
  • High-performing and receptive to feedback
  • Culturally conscious and respectful of confidentiality
  • Service oriented and flexible; committed to deliver on time in a fast paced, changing environment
  • Interpreting and translation qualifications, certificates, or licenses a plus
  • Swahili or other local languages considered a plus
  • Interested applicants are requested to provide the rate per translated word for written translation and per hour rate for simultaneous and/or consecutive interpretation in their financial proposal.
