Membership Platforms at Yahoo provide modern, secure identity offerings for consumers and businesses that interact with Yahoo systems. The scale at which the identity systems operate is unmatched on the internet, with billions of logins per day, reaching hundreds of millions of users. We power the best products on the internet and bring users together to form communities and follow the news that matters to them.

The Data Science and Security team within Membership Platforms leverages big data and machine learning to keep our users safe using a combination of online and offline processes. We analyze dozens of passive and active signals to distinguish humans from bots and other bad actors. Our machine learning models drive security features in sign-in, account recovery, and more.

In a typical day, you may find yourself:
  • Working closely with the Paranoids (Security) team to develop innovative ways to detect and block abusive registrations and fraudulent logins

  • Investigating account abuse, account hijacking, credential stuffing, and other malicious activity to identify and disrupt adversaries, both criminal and government-backed

  • Analyzing log data to identify trends or perform forensic analysis

  • Developing and training machine learning models to distinguish real traffic from bot traffic

  • Designing and prioritizing solutions for new systems and features, and participating in design review discussions

  • Writing high quality and performant code, unit tests, functional tests, and documentation to implement new features

  • Debugging code when it's not doing what you expect

  • Reviewing fellow teammates' code

  • Participating in weekly scrum team planning meetings and daily stand-ups

Required Skills/Experience

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in computer science, cybersecurity, or similar technical field

  • Software development ability in Python and Java in a Unix/Linux environment

  • Experience with ETL workflow processes and tools

  • Experience creating and maintaining data pipelines

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Strong time management and prioritization skills

Preferred Education/Experience

  • 5+ years experience in data science, data engineering and/or software engineering roles

  • Technical leadership experience

  • Experience in abuse prevention and/or fraud detection

  • Experience implementing solutions for data transformation, management, governance

  • Experience with Splunk, Hadoop, Hive, PySpark, Oozie, SQL
